Swimnerd Live

Scoreboard Software Guide

Setup instructions for Swimnerd Live scoreboard software, timing system connections, live results, swimming, diving, water polo, leaderboards, records, pace clocks, Practice Manager and livestreaming.

Getting Started

Swimnerd Live is designed to turn a Windows computer and connected display into a flexible aquatic scoreboard, leaderboard, live-results and practice display system.

What does the software do?

The software can display a scoreboard, leaderboard and Swimnerd Live Results on a TV, projector, video wall or livestream. It also includes a template editor so your facility can use different scoreboard layouts and content.

The main application displays your license information, the currently selected meet, and the status of Live Results, Scoreboard and Leaderboard functions.

Create or select a meet
  1. Open the Meet Setup tab.
  2. Create a new meet or select an existing meet from the list.
  3. Confirm the selected meet in the status banner at the top of the application.
Can't change meets? If Create New Event is disabled and you cannot select another meet, Live Results is running. Stop Live Results first, then return to Meet Setup.

You can run different functions on different computers. For example, one computer can run the scoreboard while another runs the leaderboard. Create/select the same meet on both computers.

Live Results

Send swimming meet data to Swimnerd Live Results so spectators can follow the meet online.

Start Live Results
  1. First select the correct meet from Meet Setup.
  2. Open the Live Results tab.
  3. Confirm the destination/configuration supplied by Swimnerd support.
  4. Click Start Live Results.
  5. The status in the upper-right should change and initially show Waiting for data….
  6. Once scoreboard data is flowing, the status should continually update with the last time data was sent.
Important: The manual states that Live Results is currently supported for swimming. Do not change Live Results configuration unless instructed by Swimnerd support.

Scoreboard Setup

The Scoreboard tab receives data from your timing system and creates the virtual scoreboard window you send to a TV, projector, video wall or livestream.

Basic scoreboard workflow
  1. Select the correct Timing System.
  2. Select the correct Sport.
  3. Choose the scoreboard template you want to display.
  4. Confirm the correct COM port or network connection.
  5. Click Connect/Open Scoreboard.
  6. Send the scoreboard window to the desired monitor/display.
Sport and template must match. A swimming data feed will not populate a diving template, and vice versa.
Scoreboard templates

The template list lets you change layouts during an event. Add templates to your library, highlight the template you want, then use Send Template to update the scoreboard immediately.

Templates can also be used for non-race content. For example, you can create an image-based template and send it to the scoreboard during breaks or the national anthem.

Send the scoreboard to a TV or video wall

Use the Monitors controls to choose the Windows display where the scoreboard should appear, then click Send to Monitor. The scoreboard is sent to that monitor maximized and always on top.

If you need to exit full-screen mode, right-click the scoreboard window and use its display menu.

Text Scroller

The Text Scroller lets you display spectator messages on demand. Add multiple messages, choose the duration/settings and start the scroller. Messages are concatenated and displayed as a scrolling message. The software saves your messages and settings when the window is stopped or closed.

Connect Your Timing System

Select your system below. Correct timing-system selection, output configuration and COM/network connection are required before scoreboard data can appear.

COM Port Settings
System Baud Rate Data Bits Parity Stop Bits
Colorado Timing (CTS) / SST 9600 8 Even 1
Daktronics RTD / Omega Quantum ERTD 19200 8 None 1

If no COM port appears, verify that the USB-to-RS232 adapter is connected (or that your virtual COM port is installed), then click Refresh COM Ports. Once saved, the software remembers the selected settings.

Colorado Timing System 6 (CTS6)
  1. In Swimnerd Live, select CTS as the Timing System.
  2. Connect to the scoreboard output on the back of the System 6. A 1/4" splitter can be used if you are also feeding another scoreboard.
  3. Connect the USB side of the interface to the Swimnerd Live computer.
  4. Verify that the correct COM port appears in the software.
  5. Confirm CTS serial settings: 9600 baud / 8 data bits / Even parity / 1 stop bit.
  6. Click Connect/Open Scoreboard.
Colorado Timing System 5 (CTS5)
  1. Select CTS_5 as the Timing System.
  2. Connect to the scoreboard output on the System 5. Use the optional 1/4" splitter if another scoreboard also needs the feed.
  3. Connect the USB interface to the computer.
  4. Verify the COM port.
  5. Click Connect/Open Scoreboard.
CTS5 split setup: Set lengths to count up. If displaying splits, configure cumulative time rather than subtracted time. The software calculates splits because the CTS5 data stream does not include them.
Superior Swim Timing (SST) — Serial
  1. Select SST as the Timing System.
  2. Configure SST's System and Lane tabs normally.
  3. If you use a serial scoreboard, configure SST's Scoreboard tab as normal.
  4. If you currently use SST Projection for TVs/projectors, keep that configured, but also configure the Scoreboard tab because this provides the data output to Swimnerd Live.
  5. Open the scoreboard port in SST. The button should change from Open to Close.
  6. Verify the COM port in Swimnerd Live and connect.
The SST scoreboard output must be opened or no data will flow to Swimnerd Live.
Superior Swim Timing (SST) — Network

SST Network allows timing data to reach Swimnerd Live over the network instead of a direct RS232 serial cable.

  1. Make sure the SST timing console and Swimnerd Live computer are on the same network.
  2. Open the Scoreboard tab.
  3. Select SST Network as the Timing System.
  4. Swimnerd Live listens for the SST console's UDP discovery broadcast and connects to the discovered server via TCP.
  5. Race data is then received in real time.
SST discovery uses UDP port 53535. If the system is not discovered, check that both computers are on the same network, verify SST is configured for network mode and make sure firewall settings allow the required UDP/TCP traffic.
Daktronics RTD
  1. Select Daktronics_RTD as the Timing System.
  2. Configure the connection for 19200 baud / 8 data bits / No parity / 1 stop bit.
  3. Your Daktronics timer must also be connected to your meet-management application.
  4. The RTD scoreboard output supplies athlete and team names to Swimnerd Live.
Daktronics using Colorado/CTS output

Configure the Daktronics system to output the Colorado data format. Because this is the CTS5 data stream, select CTS_5 inside Swimnerd Live.

Omega Quantum ERTD

Select the Omega Quantum ERTD timing option and use 19200 baud / 8 data bits / No parity / 1 stop bit.

The manual notes that Omega Quantum ERTD may require additional configuration on the Omega system to define specific offsets. Contact Swimnerd support for the required ERTD definitions.

Swimming

Import meet information, athlete names, team names, records and time standards so your scoreboard can show more than timing data alone.

Import a start list from Hy-Tek Meet Manager
  1. In Hy-Tek Meet Manager, export the meet's scoreboard start lists using File → Export → Start Lists for Scoreboard → Start Lists for CTS.
  2. Save the exported files to a Windows folder or USB drive.
  3. In Swimnerd Live, select Start List Directory.
  4. Point the software to the folder containing the exported files.
  5. The software imports the event, heat, athlete and team information.
  6. Use Event/Heat Data to verify that the information loaded correctly.
Automatically update start lists during the meet
  1. Open the Swimming Scoreboard settings.
  2. Click Select Startlist Directory and choose the directory where your meet-management software exports start-list files.
  3. Check Auto Update Startlist.
  4. The software monitors .scb, .sch and .slx files for changes.
  5. New or modified files automatically update lane assignments, athletes and heats after the file changes settle.

If you want records and time standards preserved when the start list changes, enable Maintain Time Standards and Records.

Records, time standards and Query Tool

The swimming tools can associate records and time standards with meet data. The manual also includes a Query Tool that can query Hy-Tek Meet Manager through its Alpha Scoreboard Interface.

Use these tools when your scoreboard template needs more information than the timing-system data stream alone provides.

Templates & Template Sync

Customize the information and layout shown on your scoreboard, then synchronize templates between the local computer and online storage.

Template Editor

The built-in Template Editor is used to create and edit scoreboard layouts. Templates can contain sport-specific fields and custom graphical content.

One sport per template. You cannot mix controls from different sports inside a single template.
Synchronize scoreboard templates

Template Sync compares the local files with the online versions and transfers whichever version is newer.

  1. Open Template Sync from the Scoreboard tab.
  2. Start synchronization.
  3. The software compares local and online templates.
  4. Newer local changes are uploaded and newer online changes are downloaded.
  5. Conflicts or errors are reported.

Synchronization includes .vdt template files and template images including JPG, JPEG, PNG and GIF files. Local files are stored under:

<Application Folder>\Resources\ScoreboardTemplates

Diving

Swimnerd Live supports diving scoreboard workflows using eDive, DiveMeets and Colorado Timing.

eDive

eDive scoreboard integration requires eDive 6.8 or newer. eDive and Swimnerd Live can run on different computers as long as they are on the same network.

  6. The Swimnerd Live scoreboard should update with the current diver; after scoring, the scoreboard and leaderboard update automatically.
Colorado Timing — Diving

When using a Colorado timer for diving, manually enter the divers and team names in the same order they appear on the Colorado system. Swimnerd Live displays the timing-system output and associates the names with that order.

Diver names and diving order

Diver lists can be loaded from eDive or entered manually. The software remembers the most recently used diving order.

Save Current updates the current stored list. Save As lets you save named lists for later use—for example, separate prelims and finals orders. Use Load From to retrieve a previously saved list.

Water Polo

Use the water-polo scoreboard mode with supported timing-system data and team/athlete information.

Team and athlete names

The manual provides controls for entering the Dark and White teams' athlete names. Enter the roster information in the software so names can be associated with the water-polo scoreboard display.

Leaderboard

The Leaderboard listens for meet-management data and creates a results display for a TV, projector or video wall.

Connect Hy-Tek Meet Manager to the Leaderboard
  1. In Hy-Tek Meet Manager, open Setup → Alpha Scoreboard Interface.
  2. Select Generic and UDP Ethernet.
  3. For a local-computer setup, use 127.0.0.1. The manual identifies this as the preferred setting. A local-network broadcast can use 255.255.255.255.
  4. In Meet Manager's Run screen, open Interfaces → Scoreboard (GENSER).
  5. Set the Remote Scoreboard Port/Socket to the same port used by the Swimnerd Live Leaderboard.
  6. Click Open Leaderboard.
  7. In Meet Manager, highlight the heat and press Ctrl-F10 to broadcast it.
  8. The Leaderboard window should update with the latest data.
If the selected port cannot be opened, the manual suggests trying another value—for example, beginning around 11000 and incrementing until an available matching port is found.
Leaderboard display options

The Leaderboard includes controls for scrolling data, showing records, showing age/year, marking results unofficial, using one or two columns, changing scroll speed, delaying scroll after refresh, choosing how many rows appear before scrolling begins, formatting names and adding display margins.

Scroll speed is entered in milliseconds; for reference, 1000 ms equals one second.

Record Board

Create and display team records, facility records, meet records and time standards on your displays.

Create or import records and time standards

You can store multiple record sets and time-standard sets, then choose which ones are displayed.

  1. Click Create New to start a blank set.
  2. Enter a description/name for the set.
  3. Choose whether the set is a Record Set or Time Standards.
  4. Enter data manually or import supported CSV data exported from Meet Manager or TeamUnify.
  5. Select the records/standards you want displayed and open the Record Board on the desired monitor/video wall.

Pace Clock

Use the scoreboard computer as a digital pace clock, countdown timer, time-of-day clock and facility messaging display.

Open and run the Pace Clock
  1. Open the Pace Clock module.
  2. Click Open Pace Clock to launch the display window.
  3. Choose to run a stopwatch/pace clock from zero, a countdown timer or the current time of day.
  4. For countdown mode, enter the duration in minutes and seconds.
  5. Send/maximize the Pace Clock on the display used by your swimmers.
Customize the Pace Clock screen

The Pace Clock layout is divided into seven sections. Sections 4, 5 and 7 are reserved for pace-clock/time information, date/day and time of day, although their fonts and colors can be changed.

Sections 1, 2, 3 and 6 can contain custom text or images, making them useful for announcements, team graphics, sponsor content or practice information.

The display grid can be shown so you can resize controls. Grid sizing is remembered relative to the Pace Clock window size.

Practice Manager

Write, store, print and run swimming workouts on a video wall or individual TVs around your pool.

Create a workout
  1. Open Practice Manager.
  2. Click Add Workout.
  3. Enter the workout information you want to store. Fields can be edited later.
  4. Add rounds and sets to build the practice.
  5. The workout distance is calculated automatically as rounds/sets are added.
Add and edit rounds / sets

Rounds are the base structure of a workout. A round can contain one set or multiple sets and can be repeated one or more times. Distance is calculated from the sets you add.

You can add rest between sets and change the order of sets or rounds by renumbering them. Use Edit Round/Set to change an existing round.

Deleting is permanent locally. Deleting a round/set removes it from the local workout unless a separate online copy is available.
Import a workout from Hy-Tek

Export the workout from Active Hy-Tek as an HTML file, then use the Hy-Tek Import function in Practice Manager. The manual specifies HTML as the supported Hy-Tek workout-import format.

Sync workouts online

Sync Workouts Online uploads locally stored workouts to the online database associated with your customer ID and downloads online workouts to the local computer. If the online and local versions differ, the software provides a visual comparison so you can choose which version to keep.

View, print and search workouts

View Workout creates an HTML view of the workout that can be displayed or printed. Search Workouts searches workout fields, including keywords and author information, which is useful as your workout library grows.

Run a workout on your TVs or video wall

After building the workout, open it in the running view and display it on the pool's TV or video wall. The workout display is customizable.

Before starting a workout round/set, open the Timer Window. From there you can start, pause or restart the active round/set. Use the right and left arrow controls to move between rounds.

Practice Manager display settings

The Settings window controls fonts and colors for the set, running timer, round and rep. The running timer can also be configured to show hundredths of a second.

The Lists area controls customizable dropdown choices used while writing rounds and sets. Default lists are included, and you can add or remove items to match your team's terminology.

OBS & Livestreaming

Use Swimnerd Live data with a broadcast production to create scoreboard graphics and overlays for your stream.

OBS integration

Swimnerd Live can stream data over your network for use in an OBS production. The software does not directly control OBS. Configure OBS separately with your camera sources and the required web-page overlays/templates.
