Well, old Phelpsy boy sure did put himself in a dilly of a pickle, didn’t he?
USA Swimming just handed down a 6 month suspension with no pay and have exempted him from competing at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
After reading Elvis Burrows rant on Facebook…
Went on a Facebook rant about this whole Phelps DUI incident. Maybe I just need a diary. pic.twitter.com/fE57WGUVDV

and Christine Brennan’s opinion piece in USA Today, I’d like to meet in the middle.
Discipline was certainly needed — but did USA Swimming have to suspend Phelps from World Champs?
The NBA’s Greg Monroe was recently suspended 2 games for his DUI arrest.
Last month, the NFL proposed a one-game deactivation with pay for the next game after any DUI arrest.
Heck, an Ohio law enforcement officer was only suspended for 6 weeks.
World Championships are 300 days away. That’s not 6 months — that’s almost a year. It’s obvious he needs help — I just don’t think suspending him from the last major international competition prior to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games is the right medicine. He needs support. Taking him off Team USA is the antithesis of what he needs.
And, unfortunately, not only does it hurt the Team…gulp…but it hurts the sport.
Imagine if the PGA suspended Tiger from the Masters 300 days from now.
Why not donate his suspended pay to DUI education or alcohol treatment programs? Perhaps require him to volunteer significant hours speaking to young people about the risks of driving while under the influence?
His reparations should be serving the community and furthering education.
