The USA Swimming Golden Goggles Male Athlete of the Year is…

Michael Phelps?

Wait a second, isn’t this the same guy that just received a monumental suspension from the same guys who are now giving him this award?

What does that say to the tens of thousands of age group swimmers?

I wonder how Tyler Clary and Connor Jaeger feel about it.

Nothing against Phelps — the dude is the #GOAT. Heck, I thought the suspension was ridiculous. But to give him the Male Athlete of the Year award after suspending him from 2015 World Championships is mind boggling.

Phelps won the 100 Fly at Pan Pacs — fantastic. Unfortunately, he won’t be swimming it in Kazan. Same goes for the 2IM and being a part of any of the relays.

From November 7th…

“This summer, Clary enjoyed a career rejuvenation. At the Phillips 66 USA Swimming National Championships, he won titles in both the 200 back and 400 individual medley and finished second in the 200 fly. Those wins earned him a spot on the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships team in Australia, where he won gold in the 200 back and finished second in the 400 IM. He also won bronze in the 200 fly and finished fifth in the 200 IM.”

Clary is slated to swim all of those in Russia plus he’s replacing Phelps in the 2IM.

From October 6th…

“Membership in USA Swimming, and particularly at the National Team level, includes a clear obligation to adhere to our Code of Conduct. Should an infraction occur, it is our responsibility to take appropriate action based on the individual case. Michael’s conduct was serious and required significant consequences,” USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus said. “Michael has publicly acknowledged the impact of his decisions, his accountability especially due to his stature in the sport and the steps necessary for self-improvement. We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development actions.”
